The classroom is full of unexpected moments. Whether it’s course-content-related or brought in from events beyond the classroom, whether it’s intentional or unintentional, sometimes a comment or behavior can cause quite a bit of controversy or even harm in your classroom. It’s important to have a sense of how to respond when these unexpected, and often uncomfortable, moments happen. After all, research shows that doing nothing is a damaging option. Come explore evidenced-based communicative tools that can help us engage thoughtfully and purposively in strategies that maintain a positive climate that is conducive to learning, and practice the skills needed in responding to similar comments in any context. Facilitated by Kayla Shearer and Adria Battaglia.
