If you’re concerned about assigning research projects and course materials from the libraries for your online course, join librarians to discuss accessing collections while campus is closed, scaffolding research assignments, building in assessment, and strategies for asynchronous and synchronous teaching to support research assignments.

CTL Fall Book Club

This year we read Small Teaching Online: Applying Learning Science in Online Classes by Flower Darby with James M. Lang which can be obtained from the library.

Small Teaching Online presents research-based teaching techniques and outlines practical and feasible applications to implement small teaching strategies that will positively impact the online classroom.

We met for four sessions, reading a part of the book each week. Discussions focused on what we learned in the chapters and how the strategies can be implemented in our courses.

Stay tuned for more opportunites to discuss online teaching! In the meantime, you can visit the CTL Commons for resources and meetup opportunities with your colleagues during the fall.

Canvas

The Canvas Team regularly offers workshops on a variety of topics and features. See the lineup for September 2020 with many traditional titles as well as the new "That One Thing...Canvas Edition" over lunch.

Zoom

The Canvas Team page includes the recording of the Canvas Team’s “Zoom Basics for Instructors” webinar from Aug. 19. It covers accessing the UT Zoom portal, scheduling meetings, Host Meeting controls - including Breakout Rooms and Polling - and where to find resources and support. They also discuss when to use the Canvas Zoom integration and when to use the Zoom web portal.

Panopto

Join the CTL and iSchool IT Lab teams for "Getting Started with Panopto" on Tuesdays at 2:00 in September. (Sept. 1-29)

Gradescope

Gradescope offers workshops every Thursday at 11:00am. Join us and learn how instructors use Gradescope. The workshops will offer guidance on how to deliver assessments remotely and outline various assessment options to meet your immediate needs, including:

Fully online assignments, no paper required
Existing paper-based assignments
Combining online and paper-based approaches

They will also cover the grading and rubric-building workflow on Gradescope and walk attendees through both the instructor and student interface for creating and submitting assignments and viewing feedback.

Canvas

Visit the Canvas Training Center to learn more about the features that support your instructional goals.

Zoom

Zoom is a centrally supported video conferencing solution available to university faculty, staff and students that enables you to meet, teach, and learn from anywhere. It is integrated with Canvas, and you can host and join meetings from your mobile device, desktop client or the web. The Canvas Team has created a set of slides related to their “Using Zoom to Teach” workshop as well as these tutorials: Using Zoom to Teach and Using Zoom Breakout Rooms.

Panopto

Panopto is a video platform instructors can use to create course materials. Create asynchronous materials like video recordings, lecturing with PowerPoint or Keynote, and other video inputs like document cameras. Live streaming is also available for synchronous lecture capture and one-way audio/video delivery to students.
