"Implementing Experiential Learning Curricula at UT-Austin"

Elon Lang, Hillary Hart, Nico Osier, Anne Braseby, Karen Maness, J.E. Johnson (University of Texas at Austin)

In this panel, administrators and faculty associated with the Experiential Learning Initiative at the University of Texas at Austin will present on their experience making a university-wide push to promote the spread of experiential learning throughout the undergraduate curriculum.

  • Hilary Hart, Director of Experiential Learning in the UT Provost’s Office, will preside over the panel and describe the scope of the Experiential Learning Initiative (ELI), outlining why UT has taken such an interest in experiential learning and how the university supports faculty whose courses feature experiential learning objectives.
  • Nico Osier, an ELI Faculty Ambassador will explain how she both incorporates experiential learning pedagogy into her classes and how she helps to support other faculty in both the School of Nursing and elsewhere to do the same.
  • Anne Braseby, Educational Consultant for the Center for Teaching and Learning, will describe how the Center incentivizes and supports ongoing pedagogical training for faculty and why it has recently focused on experiential learning methods.
  • Finally, J.E. Johnson and Karen Maness of Texas Applied Arts will discuss their recently published work on the impact of “soft-skills training” on undergraduates in the context of their course titled Practical Special Effects. In this course students collaborate across arts and engineering departments to construct, document, and film a “demo reel” of a special effect sequence that can be presented to real audiences.
