The majority of the clinical population served at the UT Speech and Hearing Center is Spanish-speaking, yet there is no audiology-specific training for students providing care. This program provides targeted training for audiology graduate students to best serve their Spanish-speaking patients. The culmination of this experience results in a digital badge provided by the Moody College of Communication, which can be viewed here.
Second-year students interested in participating in this program interview with an adjunct audiology faculty member who is fluent in Spanish. If accepted, they must complete the following requirements:
- Complete a rotation through the University of Texas Speech and Hearing Clinic consisting of one-on-one mentorship and training with a qualified Spanish speaking clinician. A grade of 80% or higher on the midterm and final evaluation is required to receive credit.
- Complete a minimum of 20 clinical hours in one year with Spanish-speaking patients.
- Participate in a Spanish medical course offered through at UT Austin with a grade of 80% or higher.
- Additionally, students will translate a clinical document into Spanish and complete a research or community project focused on audiologic care in the Spanish speaking population. This project can also count as the student’s capstone.
