Congratulations to the 2023 cohort of the CTL's Inclusive Course Design Institute (ICDI)! More than 60 graduate students and post-docs from across campus competed for an opportunity to participate in this unique program. Facilitated by Dr. Michelle Gaston, Dr. Kaitlyn Farrell Rodriguez, and PhD Candidate Roxana Loza, the ICDI is a two-week intensive interdisciplinary institute designed to help new and experienced Assistant Instructors (AIs) design a course from the ground up. Over the course of two weeks in July, 34 selected participants worked synchronously via Zoom and asynchronously via Canvas on a variety of collaborative and self-reflective activities as they learned to integrate inclusive, accessible, anti-racist and anti-oppressive practices throughout each stage of course design. By using principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and best-practices from other evidence-based course-design frameworks, participants developed a syllabus for a new course using inclusive strategies to maximize success for all students in their classrooms.
After a successful pilot with the College of Liberal Arts (COLA) over the past two summers, the CTL was able to open the program up this year to graduate students and teaching post-docs from any college across campus. The CTL extends its gratitude to the Graduate School and the COLA Office of Research and Graduate Studies for their generosity in providing stipends for this year's cohort and making this opportunity possible.
