Inclusive STEM Communication for Engineering Students
The challenges facing modern engineers are more complex than ever. Current engineering issues such as
algorithmic bias, data security and privacy, and sustainability do not only require technically skilled engineers,
but also engineers who are conscious about structural inequities and biases.
Those pressing topics for modern engineers in relation to technical knowledge and power structures are well
beyond the scope of engineering communication courses (--333T) that all engineering students are required to
take. Additionally, there is a dearth in cultural diversity courses that engineering students can take within the
Cockrell School.
The proposed “Inclusive STEM Communication for Engineering Students” course aims to empower engineering
students with the ability to learn and develop inclusive audience-based communication approaches that appeal
to the abilities, goals, and needs of underrepresented cultural groups in engineering.
