Generative artificial intelligence (generative AI) tools, such as ChatGPT and others, have recently emerged and become available for wide use. When we examine generative AI tools in an academic context, it is important to clearly identify all the facets of our classes and instructional approaches to understand what changes are necessary. While generative AI tools can offer new sources of inspiration and ways to imagine new possibilities, they should not be seen as unacknowledged substitutes for the content created for and exchanged within courses.

To that end, this summer, the CTL is pleased to offer three working sessions to help faculty and instructors navigate an evolving landscape around generative AI tools, making choices that are as informed by pedagogical decisions, institutional recommendations and required student outcomes as much as new technologies that will likely have an essential role to play in the future careers our students will pursue. We are also pleased to be joined by colleagues from across campus who are invested in this area and will bring considerable expertise to our conversations this summer.

>> Please review the following session titles and descriptions and then register (via the links below) for the sessions that are of most interest. Zoom links to our sessions will be shared through your registration a few days before the start dates.

1. Crafting Syllabus Policy Language for Generative AI Tools
July 27, 2023 (11:00am-12:00pm) Zoom
Register here for Session 1

After a brief, preliminary discussion of existing UT recommendations, the CTL will host a hands-on session to craft individual recommendations or policies around academic honesty for your courses and that focus on your evaluation of generative AI tools. After the session, participants will be offered the opportunity to receive additional feedback from facilitators.

2. Exploring Assignment Design and Generative AI [Co-facilitators from the UT Writing Center; UT Libraries; Center for Advancing Teaching Excellence (CATE), Moody]
August 3, 2023 (11:00am-12:00pm) Zoom

The technologies supporting generative AI tools continue to change and become more sophisticated. How can we create assignments for our students that addresses the presence of generative AI tools? This session will focus on providing suggestions for crafting assignments that acknowledge these tools, either accepting or not accepting their use, focusing primarily on assessment. After the session, participants will be offered the opportunity to receive additional feedback from facilitators.

3. Creative and Exploratory Uses of Generative AI in Student Learning  [Co-facilitators from the College of Fine Arts and College of Liberal Arts]
August 10, 2023; 11:00am-12:00pm) Zoom
Register here for Session 3

Many faculty and instructors have encouraged the use of generative AI tools in their classrooms, both as a way to expand critical, creative engagement with core elements of their disciplines and to make students aware of evolving professional standards. If you are interested in exploring the use of generative AI tools in your classes, please join us for a tour of a few existing tools, how to engage with them and cite their usage, and to gain feedback on how they may apply to course objectives or assignment design.
