Academic Affairs is offering two guides designed to support instructors' integration of generative AI (GenAI) tools in your courses. These resources aim to enhance your understanding and application of AI in teaching and learning, providing both theoretical insights and practical activities.

Generative AI in Teaching and Learning Guide

Purpose: This guide created by the Center for Teaching and Learning is designed to help faculty, instructors, and graduate students develop a comprehensive understanding of the potential benefits, complexities, and dilemmas associated with the use of GenAI tools in higher education. It aims to foster new approaches to teaching by addressing key questions such as:

  • How can I get started in thinking about how generative AI impacts my courses?
  • What UT policies and resources exist around the use of generative AI tools?
  • How do we define generative AI and its impact on higher education?
  • What kinds of generative AI tools exist for teaching and learning purposes?
  • What is the impact on course design when considering generative AI tools?
  • How do we address assessment concerns around generative AI tools in higher education?
  • What should I do if I suspect that a student has used these tools unethically?

How to use the guide: Begin by exploring the guiding questions to frame your understanding of GenAI in the context of your courses. Use the insights provided to inform your course design, assignment creation, and assessment strategies. This guide will help you navigate the complexities of integrating AI tools responsibly and effectively.

Faculty Guide to Getting Started with Gen AI

Purpose: This guide created by the Office of Academic Technology offers a collection of generative AI activities and lesson plans co-developed with Grammarly, tested across 30-plus departments at the University. It includes 20 activities and nine lesson plans, along with blank templates to help you create your own AI-enhanced educational experiences.

How to use the guide: Utilize the provided activities and lesson plans to incorporate GenAI into your teaching practice. These resources emphasize the importance of evaluating AI output and learning outcomes. While Grammarly was the primary tool used for testing, the activities can be adapted for use with any generative AI tool. The blank templates offer flexibility for you to design custom activities and lesson plans tailored to your specific needs.

We hope these guides will be valuable resources as you explore the integration of generative AI in your teaching.
